Defected - Tensnake In the House - Coming Sept 27th

Dropping on the 27th of September, we are proud to present Tensnake In The House. Over the last year he has emerged as one of the standout artist of the year, and we’re all a little bit excited about working with him. However, if you’ve never heard of him, you can be forgiven for not sharing in our enthusiasm just yet. So here’s a brief introduction of the man who’s only going to get bigger as the decade progresses. Born in 1975 and raised on a diet of disco, soul, boogie and funk, Tensnake aka Marco Niemerski started listening to the radio and recording shows on tape with 80s pop stars like Simple Minds and Duran Duran. “I grew up in the suburbs where there was nothing to do except listen to music so the radio was the most exciting thing around me” says Marco. “But my older brother was into D*Train, Shalamar, Aurra and other boogie stuff. When I was 16, I would drive my Vespa and listening to a lot of stuff from the 60s and 70s – stuff like The Who and The Small Faces, the UK sound. And later I had an indie faze where I listened to Sisters Of Mercy and Alien Sex Fiend who did amazing stuff sampling and working with drum machines and distorting guitar lines - and then The Pixies and The Pogues after that. But then I came back to electronic music…”It’s a good job he did, as the electronic tracks he subsequently produced have been among the most exciting and original to bless the scene in recent years. Credited as one of the main exponents of the cosmic disco sound, about which a number of Facebook fanpages have recently sprung up, his style touches on all apsects of dance music. From the bouncy techno stylings of his debut ‘Burning Down the House’ to the exultant vocal-disco of his recent ‘Need Your Loving’, every one of his productions is soaked in soul and exudes quality. It was 2009’s ‘In the End (I want You to Cry)’ however that really grabbed people’s attention. Granted the top spot on DJ History’s end of year Furtive 50 poll and spun by techno, disco and house jocks alike, it acted as a precursor to what would become far and away his biggest record to date; Coma Cat.Praise for Coma Cat“Combining the current vogue for nu-disco funk with a knowing nod towards the raw authenticity of early house, Coma Cat moves effortlessly between sounds retro and recent creating a joyful party experience.” DJ Mag"Tensnake’s Coma Cat has mutated into a fully-blown Ibiza anthem” DJ Mag“Hamburg's Tensnake has captured hearts and minds with this memorable nu disco track. Gorgeous melodies allow this track to standout and get noticed but it is the effortless glide of the Italo groove with just a pinch of the current deep house craze in those subtle synth pads that makes this one a winner. This track is sure to be huge in 2010...” Ibiza Voice “Tensnake excels at a midpoint between unapologetic populist hedonism and a sense of deep house restraint. Coma Cat fronts ambiguity from its opening seconds, with a Balearic howl and a bassline that channels 1980s R&B and 1980s house music equally… it just worms its way into your consciousness.” Pitchfork“…one of the best tracks of the year already, sounding like it was engineered in some disco lab to hit every pleasure centre imaginable. Irresistible is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but it feels like it was made for this track.” OnethirtyBPMClocking up phenomenal support from Radio 1 – it has already been added to the station’s C-list and is getting support across the board – Coma Cat is that rare record that succeeds both in the underground and the mainstream, uniting lovers of pop, indie and dance music. On the remix front, he was handed the delicate task of reimagining Goldfrapp’s ‘Alive’ with commendable results, and his much anticipated remix of Azari & III’s ‘Reckless With Your Love’ has just been released, again gaining approving nods from all the right people. Gig-wise, he’s been at pretty much every festival worth shaking a mud-caked stick at over the last few months; Big Chill, Bestival, Garden Festival, Field Day - the list goes on for longer than it’s sensible to repeat, and now he’s about to embark on a world tour, encompassing more than 30 dates in Europe, North America and Australia. Add to that the fact that he’s one of the most active Facebook-ers we’ve ever come across, and you have all the necessary ingredients of a seriously passionate and talented artist. So now, hopefully, you can understand why we’re all grinning like idiots at the prospect of not only the forthcoming Tensnake In The House compilation, but of working with him for some time to come. Check the website over the coming weeks for more info. Tracklist 01. Mugwump - Boutade 02. Zev - Don't Break It (Kenny Glasgow & Jonny White Remix) 03. Tiger & Woods - Dr. Burner 04.
Edirol R09-HR records 40 hours of music @ Soul Camp

Edirol Roland R09-HR field recorder Review by Brian CabalicEvery so often we make a purchase that we aren't so happy with. Whether it be a poorly advertised feature, failure to perform when needed, or difficultly setting up - the last thing you need is a surprise like that after you've done your part researching consumer reports. Hope you saved your receipt! Today I'm going to do a quick review on the Edirol R09-HR, proudly withstanding it's 2nd Soul Camp and this time almost 40 hours of music with only a few hours rest itself! When it comes to field recorders, there is a lot to consider. Mainly the durability, battery life (if rechargeable), SD Card capacity, and ease of use. Enter the Edirol R09-HR. I've had this unit for over 12 months now, and paid about $330 at the time. It features a 1/8" stereo input (that's all you need, dont be fooled by 1/4" inputs), rubberized outer shell, easy to read display, removable SD Card (I use 8GB cards), a hold button to prevent from accidentally hitting stop or split, and comes bundled with the A/C adapter (crucial!) and remote control. The unit also has a USB 2.0 connect, and preview speaker - but I have a tendancy to just remove the SD card and upload/preview to my computer manually. The unit conveniently records 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio in .WAV or .MP3 format. Unless you need the full res .wav file and have huge amounts of spare space on your computer to process these files, I've found that recording at 320K Mp3 works fine for most DJ sets. 1 hour comes out to approximately 140mb of data.Even though I tried to make a habit if splitting the audio between every DJ, obviously I can't stand at the dj booth the whole time. At one point, I was away from the Edirol R09-HR for more than 7.5 hours. That's 7.5 hours of unattended recording going from early morning coldness to baking in the afternoon sun. I know that's not the best way to treat your gear, but the point is - the Edirol R09-HR stepped to the plate when we needed it to most. Set it, and forget it! I've used a variety of SDHC Cards including Toshiba, PNY, and SanDisk. How much space do you need? All of Soul Camp fit on ONE 8Gb card @ 320k Mp3. Frankly an 8Gb SDHC card will run you about $20 and I'd rather have 2 or 3 of those in my case for backup rather than one 16Gb card. Figure out what works best for you and your budget. The Edirol R-09HR is as easy to use as plug-n-play. Power, Line in to unit, Line out from Mixer, Check recording levels, hit record, and Lock. Reverse procedure when finished. Going on over 1 year now, I have over 50Gb of recorded DJ sets with the Edirol. I can honsetly say that even when this breaks *knock on wood* or when it's time for a new unit - I will keep my purchase in the Edirol family. For those of you looking for a good deal on the Edirol Roland R09-HREdirol / Roland R-09HR High-Resolution Audio Recorder for $265 No Tax, Free shipping from B&H Photo. Edirol / Roland R-09HR High-Resolution Audio Recorder for $265 No Tax, Free shipping from B&H Photo.Review by Brian Cabalic For more information on Soul Camp, please visit SoulCampout.net

ALA Tell ya how to be a successful DJ and Promoter with this exclusive Interview with Dive Radio's very own DJ ALA (also known as Arnel "Crispy Pata" Aguinaldo) I knew Arnel @ UCSD, back when when getting a college degree was totally fashionable. We rarely kicked it then - I was in Liberal Arts and he was a fricken Engineer, what do you expect? But who would have known we would become such good friends... through house music of course! For over 7 years DJ ALA has established his brand DIVE as one of the driving forces behind the San Diego house music scene. I had a chance to catch up with Arnel while he was on his DIVE Summer 2010 Tour and asked him to tell us about the secrets of being a successful promoter and DJ. -by Brian CabalicDJ ALA on Networking This is an obvious one. Like many other professions, networking is key to a successful career, particularly as a traveling DJ. I’m blessed to have worked with a number of industry luminaries around the world who I consider personal friends of mine and try to stay in touch to keep our relationship vibrant and fruitful. And the biggest deal closer for a booking is a solid referral from friends like jojoflores, Roy Davis, Master Kev, Marques Wyatt, & host others who have been more than helpful along the way! I always make it a point to return the favor by introducing them to like-minded individuals who also can help foster their DJ/producer careers. In addition, I don’t have an agent any more so my correspondence is direct with other DJs and promoters, and I can speak from my own experience booking talent for our DIVE events that they prefer working directly with potential guest DJs.Marketing Media - Stay connected! In the 2002, I set up www.djala.com and started hosting streaming and archived mixsets online before the podcast boom as well as duped CDs to give out to house aficionados, DJs, promoters, etc. To me, this is the “hustle” in the game and it never seems to end. With today’s evolving media, it’s important to stay on top of the game so people continue to enjoy the music from all parts of the globe using a number of different outlets (podcast, blogs, website, etc).Dedication - Persistence - Passion I love and enjoy what I do. Without passion, there’s rarely enough dedication or persistence to get through the dry spells and lows and believe me, I’ve had my share. But house music and its diverse community along with a reliable support system (faith, family, friends) provide the needed energy to push through and I realize with passion in this game, the “work” comes naturally and success is not too far to reach! Print out your confirmation and bring it with you so we can verify the amount of tickets purchased. 2. The tickets are wristbands that will be picked up at the door and is required to be worn on the wrist and kept visible at all times. 3. If you bought tickets for other people and you guys are driving up at separate times, simply forward your confirmation to those people and have them print it out and bring it as you would. You will have ticket credits that will be checked off as they arrive. Be careful about who you send it to, because if the confirmation gets into the wrong hands and they show up claiming that they are one of your ticket purchases, it's not our responsibility to investigate credits once they are used. Once your credits are gone, they are gone. 4. If you think you may have purchased a ticket but never received a confirmation, please email us at: soulcampout@gmail.com. We will confirm and resend if need be. 5. If you need to transfer tickets to a friend because you are unable to make it for some reason, it works the same way as # 3.
Featured Artist - Brian Salazar

Brian Salazar @ DETOX SundaysBrian Salazar In the world of Nightlife, competition could not be more fierce than in San Francisco. Almost every month we give birth to a new artist, party, or venue. How do you prove excellence in any of these realms? You need 3 things - Experience, Consistency, and Integrity... Enter: Brian Salazar I've had the honor of working with Brian for about 4 years now, and it's safe to say he is a master in his element, one that changes week to week. Some DJs "stick to their guns", and it becomes quite obvious when they are not in tune w/ their surroundings. Not Brian. He's like a scientist - he observes, analyzes, then reaches into his record bag for a solution. Brian carries an arsenal of different sounds from Deep/Soulful vocals to Funky/Jackin Chicago style house to driving Tribal/Latin rhythms. My personal favorite - the house music gem that slips it's way into the CDJ and when played, magnetically steers onlooking DJs to the booth only to ask Brian "WHAT TRACK IS THIS?!". Full of surprises and never a dull moment!Brian Salazar - Undisclosed LocationKing of all that is Random It goes without saying that artists are often interesting individuals out side of their art-form. Maybe I shouldn't use the word "interesting" to describe Brian's outside-of-the-club demeanor. If there is a line between weird and random, you'll find Brian teetering back and forth on that line. Actually, leave it to Brian to find a way to combine weird and random, and then exaggerate it, and then amplify it. That being said - we've all come to accept him as a creative person and contribute that to his success as a DJ and Promoter.Brian Salazar @ Lovevolution 2009 Photo by Holt SorensonThe hunger to produce music What's left for Brian to conquer? In an exclusive email interview (LOL) I asked him what he has in store for his loyal fans: "I believe the only way to keep up with SF's talented frontline is to keep things interesting - balancing memorable sets and playing new music with a humble, approachable, personality. Additionally, eyebrow raising new ideas/themes for events, and definitely, introducing new, well produced, music are just a few of the many things I may need to do to separate myself from the rest of the hungry pack. Adjusting to our ever changing industry, I definitely think that I need to keep an ear out analyzing what sound is hot and what's being played... giving the crowd a sound they may appreciate while supplying the scene with what it may be missing. Self expression through production is the next big step." The morale of the story - Stay ahead of the hungry pack by being even more hungry. Dont be nom-nom, be nom-nom-nom.
